So you want to get into golf but you don’t know where to start. All you know is everyone post lockdown is playing and you want in. Well, here we are… at the place where all your questions will be answered. The beauty of this article before you is that it not only comes with recommendations on which clubs to pick but also advice on why you should pick them.

There are many varying factors which go into buying golf clubs and it can be a daunting task, so stumbling upon this article is without a doubt the best thing you could have done for you and your future golf game.

So if you’re brand new to the game, which i’m guessing you are, let’s start by breaking down a few things. The rules of golf allow golfers to carry 14 clubs in their bag. These clubs typically consist of a putter, a driver, a wood, 3 wedges and 8 irons.

Golf Sets typically look like this:

3 Wood,

Pitching wedge, Sand Wedge, Gap Wedge

9 iron, 8 iron, 7 iron, 6 iron, 5 iron, 4 iron, 3 iron

People think golf is an expensive sport to get into and they couldn’t be more wrong, so if you’re sat there thinking “sh*t that’s a lot of equipment and it sound expensive”…don’t worry, as you don’t have to start with this many clubs.

This is typically what the average person at a golf club carries. Whereas, If you’re just starting and getting into the game you only need these 6 clubs!

9iron ,7iron, 5iron

Pitching Wedge

That looks a lot better on the eye and budget now doesn’t it. To get into golf you’ll need to allocate around $200 to get started but this will get you a set of golf clubs which could last you forever. Give a man a driver, he can go to the driving range…., give a man a set of golf clubs and he can play golf for the rest of his life.

4. Aspire X1 Men’s Complete Golf Set (Handicap Recommendation 29-36+)

Aspire X1 Men's Golfing Set

Best Features: A complete set of 9 clubs which allow for a variety of shot making possibilities. The set comes with a bag and a putter. The putter looks very good and is the stand out piece of the set. Perfect for someone looking to start their golfing jounrey.

First on the tee, we have Aspire and their X1 Men’s complete golf set. Despite not being a well known brand Aspire’s clubs do exactly what you’d want from a beginners set. They come complete with a bag and the set contains all the clubs you’d need to complete 18 holes around your local municipal.

Set composition:

The set is sold as follows: You’ll receive a Bag, Driver, 3 wood, Hybrid wood, 6,7,8,9 irons, Pitching wedge and Putter.

Now, for those of you who are complete beginners… the shaft is the stick part of the golf club which you hold and it is attached to the head of the club which is the part which makes contact with the ball. Shafts are available in typically two different materials but in an array of different flexes.

The two materials you’ll encounter in golf are steel and graphite, gone are the days of using wood. Steel is better suited to those of you with fast club head speeds, as they allow for much greater control through impact, where as graphite shafts are much lighter and will help those of you with slower swing speeds.

However, it is very rare to find a driver with a steel shaft, nowadays, all drivers and woods come with a form of graphite shaft.

The flex of the shaft is again something you may need to consider, if you’re strong and swing fast, a stiffer shaft is recommended, however if you’re a complete beginner a regular flex shaft is recommended. As you progress in golf and improve you may find it beneficial to invest in stiffer flexes such as ‘stiff’ felx or ‘X-flex’ for better control, but let’s cross that bridge when you get there.

This set has Graphite Shaft on the Woods & True Temper Steel Shafts on Irons.

Regarding performance, i’d rate these at complete beginner. If you’re a handicap of between 29-36+ these would be perfect for you to get started.

Simply on the fact the shafts are regular and on the whippier side of regular at that. Which if you’re new to the game, is great as it allows for more power with a slower swing speed, however if you’re a younger and more agile athlete, with a faster club head speed, you’ll struggle to yield the control you desire with these clubs!

That being said, these are perfect for someone looking to dip their toes into the world of golf and at a price of $210 you cant really go wrong!

Budget Golf Club Buyers Guide

Golf Club Length

Golf clubs off the shelf are typically made for people with a height of 5ft9″ – 6ft0″. If your height falls above or below this… fear not! The clubs will still work you may just have to bend your legs more or stand slightly further away from the ball! However, there are different options available for the taller or smaller golfer just read through the description of the clubs before making a purchase!

Here is how you should adjust the golf clubs based on your size:

As a rough rule of thumb, you can fit irons using this height chart below…

6ft 9″ – 7ft 0″ Add 2″

6ft 6″ – 6ft 9″ Add 1 1/2″

6ft 3″ – 6ft 6″ Add 1″

6ft 0″ – 6ft 3″ Add 1/2″

5ft 9″ – 6ft 0″ Standard Length

5ft 6″ – 5ft 9″ Subtract 1/2″

5ft 3″ – 5ft 6″ Subtract 1″

5ft 0″ – 5ft 3″ Subtract 1 1/2″

4ft 9″ – 5ft 0″ Subtract 2″

Grips come in all shapes and sizes, however they truly don’t make too much of a different unless they are for your putter. Grips for Irons and woods are all pretty standardised however the material can vary. Whereas, with putting grips they come in all sorts of funky shapes and sizes. If you struggle with putting think about changing your grip before you jump ship and change putters!

Shaft Material

Shafts are no longer made of wood! Who would have thought… technology hey. Nowadays, you’ll typically see either steel or graphite shafts in golf clubs.

If you are older with a slower swing speed you’ll benefit from having a graphite shaft as it will give you that extra bit of distance and as long as you’re not swinging out your shoes you wont lose much control!

Whereas, if you’re more athletic, younger and go at the bull like bull charging a red rag then a steel shaft will be more up your street as you will gain alot more control which in golf is the secret to lower scores and more enjoyment!

Cast Iron vs Forged Irons Golf Clubs

Here’s an interesting topic to learn about. Cast irons also know as game improvement irons are what beginner should look at buying. These have cavity backs and allow you to gain distance from off centre hits. Cavity back irons are more forgiving and easier to use however at the expense of control. However, if you’re a complete beginner you wont have any control anyway! So definitely look at that option first!

Forged Irons also known as blades, are much much much more difficult to hit but if you can hit them boy do you get a lot fo control over the ball. Forged irons are recommended if you have a handicap of 8 or less as you wont really notice a difference otherwise. If you’re a beginner…. stick to cast iron.

Control And Performance

Control and performance are becoming ever more readily available to beginner golfers. This is thanks to the technology in the clubs is only getting better and better. Technology like Twist Face from Taylor made helps point your ball back towards the middle of the fairway with off centred hits. This is just a glimps into what modern clubs can do. Performance from budget golf clubs is slightly lower however much better than it was ten years ago so now is a great time to start.

Design And Appearance

Design and appearance are all personal preference. Some clubs will just suit your eye more than others, simply based off how they look down on the ground behind the golf ball.

Design doesn’t affect performance and therefore if you’re a beginner this isn’t something you should worry about right out the gate. All golf equipment at this price is of a basic design and appearance however this should’t put you off starting. It’s easy to fall into the trap of spending too much money on something when you don’t really know if you’ll like it or not! So if you’re looking at just experiencing some golf and want to have your own equipment the clubs appearance or design shouldn’t be of any concern!

As you improve and want to invest more money into your golf game, there are many custom design options available from manufacturers. Such as initial engraving on wedges or custom colour schemes on drivers and putters. But at the budget price range, nothing will be customisable as price is the only concern!

Value For Money

Let’s be realistic, at the price range of $400 or less, the quality of the golf clubs isn’t going to be amazing. When you compare the clubs to the elite in the market, $400 dollars is the same price as a elite driver. So expectation management is key when looking at budget golf clubs.

Therefore, value for money is simply going to be based on how much you can play. If you’re looking at playing a lot i honest recommend trying to stretch the budget as much as you can as the difference in feel as your improve can be massive with slightly more expensive clubs.

However, if you’re simply looking at starting the game, literally any set you buy from amazon or another online retailer will be of great value for money for what you’re wanting them for.

What are best golf clubs for an average golfer?

Your level of golf and desired end goal will ultimately dictate the golf clubs I recommend you purchase.

For example, if you aspire to be a single figure handicap in the future and you can see yourself allocating a lot of time and effort into the craft, you should look at investing into a world renowned manufacture, such as Taylormade, Titliest, Ping, Cleveland, Cobra, Mizuno, Callaway or Wilson Staff.

If your goal is to just come out and play once or twice a month/year any company will be sufficient as all you’re really after is a set of basic clubs!

Amazon has a large amount of sets readily available which are perfect for anyone looking at entry into the sport!

What are the best golf clubs to buy for a beginner?

People think the secret to getting good at golf is buying the most expensive clubs on the Market. No. There is no need to do such a thing if you’re only a beginner and just want to take up the sport as a hobby!

Golf, like any hobby takes time and practice to improve! SO before you go rushing to buy the next new set off expensive clubs off a shelf in a golf superstore, hold fire and have a search online for some cheaper alternatives! Some companies to get you started are: Wilson Ultra or Callaway Strata.

Even though there are expensive options through these brands, these companies do a great job offering some cheaper beginner alternatives to the equipment the Tour Pros use!

Beginners should just try to get their hands on whatever set their budget allows however if possible i recommend trying to get your hands on clubs from one of those two companies.

How much should I spend on golf clubs as a beginner?

Realistically you’re going to be looking and anywhere from $200-400 if you’re looking to get the ball rolling and buy your own equipment.

Sometimes you can find good second hand deals although with golf there is some much that goes into the modern technology you’re almost always better off researching whats the latest model and assess your budget accordingly to find something with meets your desired price!

To explain the price of clubs in golf it’s probably best to break down equiptment at each level so you can have a realistic expectation as to what your money will get you.

Clubs used by professionals are expensive. period. However this doesn’t mean golf clubs are expensive. Professional equipment can cost anywhere from $1,000- $3,000 once you’ve factored in all the items. Sets of Irons are anywhere from $500-800, a good driver is $350-500 and we haven’t even talked about wedges or putters yet!

However, golf is a journey and no one with a brain should buy this equipment if they’re new to the game. Get yourself a budget $300-400 set, learn how fun the game can be then slowly step by step acquire new pieces to your arsenal!
